Latest from the schoolhouse
The work on the schoolhouse and hall is getting nearer to completion. The Council’s contractors are doing us proud with the work they have carried out. Because damp was found behind the walls at either end of the hall, the exisitng wall covering had to be removed and taken back to the original stone. Some of the floorboards at either end also had to be taken up and replaced. The house itself is currently having all new wiring and fittings installed, after which decoration and floor covering will be done.
A path will be laid to the schoolhouse door – this will become the main door into the building.
The three small sheds at the back of the building are being made into one bigger shed to store the marquee, barbeque etc.
The opening party is getting nearer!
Hallmost there!
Work on the Schoolhouse and Community Centre is nearing completion. There have been extensive repairs to the roof on the schoolhouse and also on the hall. The schoolhouse itself is having a complete refurbishment, while the hall has had an opening made through to the schoolhouse – making for a much larger community space. New flooring has still to be laid in the house and the hall, and this will be followed by decoration.
Once complete, all furniture and equipment will be reorganised to give all groups the best use of available space. A party is planned for the opening of the new building – more news of that later!
Schoolhouse Week Three
Schoolhouse – Week Two
Work continues to take down the old lath and plaster from the walls in preparation for the refurbishment. A productive meeting today between Community Council representatives, KW Contractors and Abdeenshire Council officers discussed the next steps for the project.
We have learned that the break through from the Hall into the house will require three steps as the house is lower than the hall. The steps will be on the house side. We have asked for the opened up area to be as wide as possible to make the maximum use of floor space. We have also asked for concertina type doors between the two areas, both for safety – particularly for playgroup use – and to allow for seperate meetings or activites to run concurrently. The break through will be one of the last tasks in the project, allowing for activites to continue in the hall for as long as possible.
A few things have to be clarified, including whether the granite shed at the back is to be repaired and insulated, whether new flooring for the hall is to be included and also if a toilet and washbasin will be installed in the old bathroom area.
Scaffolding will be erected sometime next week, meaning the garden will be out of use for the time being. The whole project is expected to be completed by Christmas.
Work begins on the old Schoolhouse!
Work party last Sunday with volunteers emptying the house ready for the contractors to start on the refurbishment work. Thanks to everyone who took part, and to those who have given a temporary home to marquees etc.
Workmen have begun to remove all the old plaster, starting with the upstairs rooms
